The fusion of sports and technology has taken a new turn with the NFL Rivals game. This mobile football game, licensed by the NFL and developed by Mythical Games, has recently integrated a feature allowing players to purchase NFT player cards directly within the app.
NFL Rivals offers players an immersive experience, allowing them to step into the role of a General Manager. Players can assemble teams, compete against others, and now, with the integration of NFTs, own digital tokens of their favorite NFL stars.
Previously, the purchase of NFT player cards was restricted to Mythical's web-based marketplace. However, with the recent update, players who have reached level 4 or higher can tap the "Improve My Roster" button and purchase suggested NFT player cards directly within the app. It's worth noting that the game currently does not offer a full marketplace browsing experience but provides limited suggestions for player cards.
NFL Rivals Marketplace
The integration of NFT purchases within the app follows Google's recent policy update, allowing NFT purchases and in-app integrations on the Android Play Store. This move by NFL Rivals is a nod to the growing popularity and acceptance of NFTs in mainstream apps and platforms.
To facilitate the purchase of NFTs within the app, NFL Rivals introduced an in-game currency called Credits. These are not cryptocurrencies but can be bought using fiat currency. Players can use Credits to buy suggested NFTs, with bundles ranging from 140 Credits for $1.99 to 7,000 Credits for $99.99.
Mythical Games has plans to expand the in-game marketplace integrations in the coming months. Their vision is to allow players to both buy and sell NFTs via the app. The complete selection of NFTs and the selling feature is available only on the web-based Mythical Marketplace.
The free-to-play NFL Rivals game has seen significant success, amassing over 2 million downloads since its soft launch in April. The game's official worldwide launch was recently announced, just in time for the 2023 NFL season.
