In collaboration with web3 startup Cryptoys, Disney is launching a new NFT collection featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Pluto.

The entertainment giant Disney has joined forces with Cryptoys, a startup specializing in digital toys and collectibles. This collaboration is fueled by a $23 million Series A funding round supported by toymaker Mattel. The partnership aims to introduce the "Mickey and Friends" NFT collection, priced at $39.99 per digital toy.

The "Mickey and Friends" collection comprises 15 distinct pieces, each with varying "skin designs" and rarity levels. According to Cryptoys, the collection will have a similar rarity structure to previous releases: Common, Rare, Legendary, Grail, and Ultra Grail rarity levels.

Collectors who complete their sets can be rewarded with a special Grail or Ultra Grail Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey. This toy can't be bought on the drop day, but the team is working on ideas for offering more rarities to a wider collector base.

"This is the first time people will experience Mickey Mouse in this way," CEO Will Weinraub said.

Cryptoys issues its digital toys as NFTs on the Flow blockchain. While precise on-chain sales data remains unavailable for public scrutiny, the venture is a promising one. It represents a fusion of Disney's timeless charm with the innovative possibilities of blockchain technology.

This isn't Cryptoys' first collaboration with Disney. Earlier, they released crypto collectibles based on the mega-popular Star Wars characters. The collection comprised 15 limited-edition Star Wars digital toys of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia. The collectibles were available for $39.99, and the team is also working on additional rarities of Yoda digital toys to be more widely available.

After initially exploring the metaverse in 2022 and selecting Polygon as its blockchain of choice, Disney has pivoted its focus. Following a change in leadership and the disbanding of its metaverse unit, the company is now concentrating on NFTs and decentralized finance (DeFi).
